Mr. Nyakassi M.B. Sanyang has been serving as the Statistician-General of The Gambia since his appointment in August 2012. Prior to this role, he worked as an Economist/Statistician and Senior Economist/Statistician at the Economic Research Department of the Central Bank of The Gambia from March 2006 to July 2012. His responsibilities included the compilation and publication of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Statistics, as well as reporting to the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the Bank on real sector developments.
Mr. Sanyang also worked at The Gambia Family Planning Association, an affiliated member of the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF), as the Programme Officer, Research and Evaluation from December 2023 to February 2026. Prior to this appointment, he worked in the Central Statistics Department of The Gambia (now Gambia Bureau of Statistics) in various positions, starting as a Statistical Clerk and progressing to Senior Statistician from November 1994 to December 2023.
He holds an MA in Economic Policy Management (EPM) from the University of Ghana, obtained in 2010, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Economics (double major) from St. Mary’s University, Halifax, Canada, in 1999. He is currently a member of the ISI.
Mr. Sanyang has provided multiple consultancies on data collection, data processing, and report production, including the National Human Development Reports of The Gambia, and has contributed to the development of various national policy documents.
